Carbon Footprint & Sustainable Operations

Designtex is committed to operating as a sustainable company. With a business model to design and distribute surface materials, we recognize that our carbon emissions come primarily from our facilities and transportation. In early 2007, we began by reducing and offsetting the electricity use of our NYC headquarters. With additional investments in carbon offset projects, Designtex has been able to fully balance its global operational footprint starting in 2010, and continues to do so to this day. By supporting ten greenhouse gas emission reduction projects throughout North America, Designtex is keeping 20,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere over the lives of these projects.

Designtex evaluates carbon reduction projects for their strong environmental and social benefits. Past projects we supported include NativeEnergy’s Indiana School District Wind Project, which developed new wind turbines to power school buildings, while also providing hands-on renewable energy training for young people at those schools. Other offset project investments include the Greensburg Wind Farm, an 11-turbine wind project built to power a Kansas town after a devastating tornado; the Wewoka Biogas project in Oklahoma, enabling landfill gas generation to be used in place of fossil fuels to power a local brick factory’s kilns; and the Oka Reforestation Project, creating diverse native forests in abandoned farm fields with the added benefit of planting apple orchards that support local food shelves.

In addition to balancing our carbon footprint, Designtex is proud that its digital printing facility in Portland, ME has been certified for the sixth year in a row to the SGP, the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership’s recognized program for reduced environmental impacts in the printing industry. The SGP program was established to provide third-party verification of sustainability efforts and best practices in the printing industry. This continuous-improvement certification keeps Designtex innovating a more sustainable path forward in the digital printing industry.

Products & Transparency

Designtex is committed to improving the material health of our products. We believe that by providing more transparent product information, our customers can make better-informed choices. Currently, Designtex is a pilot company for Material IQTM, a project by Greenblue to develop a cross-industry database containing complex material hazard information on ingredients and products. Designtex is also a member of the Core Committee of the Manufacturers Advisory Panel for the Health Product Declaration (HPD), a tool for reporting product ingredient hazards in a standardized format. We believe that partnering within the industry and the sustainable business community at large is the best way to advance material health.

In addition to transparency efforts, Designtex works with a number of other product certifications, including facts™ – the third party certification for the NSF/ANSI 336 sustainability standard for textiles. This voluntary consensus standard was crafted by a broad range of stakeholders along the textile supply chain, as well as the academic, public health, and design communities. Designtex is proud to have been a contributing member of the joint committee throughout the seven years of the standard’s creation. Approved as an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard, it is a living document that Designtex will rely on to ground the company’s decisions and actions for more sustainable textiles.
